In 2008 I was stationed in a hotel not far from the Olympic Hub for a week or so before being ostracised to the outer rim of the city in the Media Village, having to take a train into our work zone between the third and fourth ring roads.

Today I am staying at the Marco Polo Parkside, just two kilometres from that original hotel and only 10 minutes (on a good day) to the Water Cube, which will be our home for six days from tomorrow.

This was a vibrant, bustling Olympic city and today, five years on, it still looks like an Olympic City.

The Bird’s Nest (Olympic Stadium), the National Indoor Stadium (Basketball among other sports), the International Broadcast Centre (today hosting a trade fair in its vast chasm), the Main Press Centre, now a hotel, are all clustered around the…
